Support local businesses

Local Procurement

I am sick of hearing about Hastings and Hawke's Bay owned and operated businesses losing tenders to out of town firms - whether that be businesses from other regions/cities or from multi-national firms.

Council has what is called "progressive procurement policy" but this isn't working as best as it can for local businesses. Price is an important factor and many local firms do struggle when going up against the balance sheets of these large firms. We need to find the right tension that gives local businesses firms a greater chance of success.

Why?

I strongly believe that local businesses contribute to the economic and social well being of our region. They train and employ young people, they create career opportunities for staff, the support other local businesses and they GIVE. They are invested in our community and they support many community groups. The money goes around and is spread into our community and their profits enable them to invest further locally.

I will make it a priority that the procurement policy is reviewed and that it is worked up with local businesses so that they have a much greater chance of working with council.

I also believe local businesses are much more committed and proud of the work that they do for their place and fellow residents and rate payers.
