Economy

Hastings is the economic engine of the Bay. We have some of the largest primary sector businesses in New Zealand and we have some innovative businesses that support this sector.

It's time to maximise Hastings' position as the economic engine room of our region. We need to capitalise on the current economic climate with the same agility and ambition as other leading regions.

To achieve this, we must ensure we have sufficient land available for industrial, commercial, and residential development. We will actively support local businesses and key sectors, particularly the primary sector, to innovate and create meaningful career opportunities for our youth. Our goal is to promote Hastings District as an exceptional place to live, work, and play.

My 25 years of experience championing businesses across Hastings and Hawke's Bay, both as a marketer and as the editor of the region's only business magazine, The Profit, has given me unique insights into our economic strengths.

Hastings truly is the economic powerhouse of the Bay. We are home to some of New Zealand's largest primary sector businesses and a wealth of innovative enterprises that support them. As the "Food Bowl of our country," we must fully capitalise on this unique point of difference.

The new FoodEast innovation hub in Hastings presents a significant opportunity. We need to ensure it becomes the primary platform for success for our food innovators. Furthermore, we need an incubator to create added value from the incredible fruit, produce, and proteins (beef, sheep meat, goat) that we grow here.

Our CBDs require a robust mix of professional service businesses with access to smart technology, fostering economic growth. The Hastings CBD is currently undergoing a major transformation, a project I proudly led as the Economic Development portfolio leader during my first and second terms on council. We all envision an exciting, vibrant, and safe CBD—a place where people choose to visit, live, work, and play.

Finally, we need a council that is truly "open for business," ensuring its dealings with the business community are transparent, enabling, and efficient. As chair of Performance & Monitoring in 2022/23, I advocated for a comprehensive review of the building consenting department. This review has now been completed, and we are actively pressing the Chief Executive to implement the necessary improvements.

It's time to accelerate Hastings' progress and firmly establish it as the most liveable district in New Zealand.

We need to create career opportunities for our young people. We don’t want to provide them just with a job, but a pathway to a rewarding career that improves their wellbeing, but also that of their future whanau.

We need to set a target of new jobs created - an aspirational but achievable target and work with local business and businesses relocating to provide rewarding career opportunities.
