Early Life

I was born at the Hawke’s Bay Hospital in Hastings in 1971. My parents Ron and Diane Harvey bought "the dream"… building a new home in the ‘up and coming’ suburb of Flaxmere. Dover Road was an amazing street to grow up in during the 70s. Nearly every house was owned by the family who lived there and all the kids in the neighbourhood played softball, rugby and other sports until called inside by their parents for dinner.

It was in those early years that my father was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, a degenerative muscle disease that would be a major setback for the family. Dad was a trained auto mechanic but worked several jobs including owning his own milk delivery business. This is when my love for rising early, before the sun, was born. I would join my father and deliver milk around the Mahora, Mayfair and central Hastings areas.

I went to Flaxmere Primary and then Parkvale Primary and on to attend Hastings Intermediate and Hastings Boys’ High School – all which I enjoyed and made many lifelong friends. While at high school, I enjoyed playing all sports, especially cricket, tennis, and rugby. It was at HBHS that I also got my first taste of journalism, as a budding writer for the school's newspaper.

At 17, my parents moved to Australia, to live in a warmer climate which would help Dad's disability.

"Dad is my hero, he's never given up despite his disease. It's been a tough road but he's shown strength through adversity and he's proven that you should never give up."

Advance Hastings. Success. Hastings going for it! These are taglines that have been used to promote Hastings for over a century. Hastings is enjoying the good times – there are huge opportunities and challenges. Damon is determined to make Hastings, Flaxmere and Havelock North great places to live, work and play.

He wants to ensure that the rural communities prosper and that what we grow is premium food products exported to the World.

With a family of mixed ages – he wants Hastings to be a safe and fun place that they call home, and a thriving city and district that appeals to the older girls, offering them the perfect place to bring up their own families some time into the future.

A healthy community is a strong desire for Damon. He knows the benefits of a good wellbeing and Hastings will offer a wide range of active recreational facilities – both man-made and natural.

We need to protect and enhance what Hastings offers, from the land to the sea. It’s the best place to Live!
